Consciousness Atlas

Landscape of Consciousness

它以 Robert Lawrence Kuhn 於 2024 年發表的論文 「A Landscape of Consciousness」為基礎。

Landscape of Consciousness 網站

Landscape of Consciousness 網站是對 Robert Lawrence Kuhn 論文「A Landscape of Consciousness: Toward a Taxonomy of Explanations and Implications.」 Landscape of Consciousness 網站收錄了 450 種以上的意識理論,可透過五種方式存取:Landscape Grid;Landscape Categories; All Landscape Theories;Landscape Map;Interactive Visualizations。

Mikkilineni and Michaels’s Emergent Optimization Process

Consciousness as Life’s Uncertainty-Managing Optimizer

Rao Mikkilineni and Max Michaels argue that consciousness evolved as a regulator that helps living systems manage uncertainty. Organisms live in metastable states that can tip into disorder; consciousness detects approaching instability, draws on stored knowledge from the genome and memory, and triggers action that keeps the system coherent.

Rao Mikkilineni, Max Michaels

What consciousness is

Consciousness is an emergent optimization process: a meta-regulator that integrates encoded knowledge with real-time feedback so that a living system stays stable under fluctuating conditions.

Mind and body

Following Mark Burgin’s General Theory of Information, material structures transform matter and energy, mental structures turn information into knowledge, and information bridges the two. Consciousness sits where they meet.

Mechanism

A meta-regulator that detects when the system nears instability, retrieves stored knowledge, and initiates adaptive action that preserves coherence.

Core claims

Criticisms

The view explains what consciousness does more than why it feels like anything. It also wavers on machines: Mindful Machines ‘would not possess human-like subjectivity’, yet the authors frame AGI as part of the evolution of digital consciousness.

Implications

AI consciousness: Possible
Mikkilineni and Michaels see Mindful Machines as potential extensions of human consciousness with potential for sentience, while saying they would lack human-like subjectivity.
Survival beyond death: No
Death is a genomic design feature, and consciousness enables life to flourish within bounded time rather than conquering death.
Meaning and purpose: Humanistic only
Consciousness is a pragmatic regulator for maximizing meaningful existence within limits, though the authors also point to Aurobindo’s vision of higher consciousness to come.
Virtual immortality: Unlikely
The authors propose building graceful failure modes into machines, modeled on biological death, to prevent harmful persistence.
